A Festive Sneak Peek: 3 Christmas Nutrition Tips from Our Dietitian

3 Christmas Nutrition Tips to Help You Feel Your Best This December

Christmas is a brilliant time of year, but it can also come with a fair bit of pressure — food everywhere, busy schedules, family plans, and the feeling that we should somehow be able to “manage it all”.

If you’re already feeling a bit overwhelmed by the upcoming festive period, don’t worry. Our NHS Dietitian, Ian Thomas, has you covered.

Every month, Ian joins the Jim’s Gym Healthy Habits Club to talk through simple, practical ways to feel good and stay well. And this week, as an early Christmas treat, we’re sharing a small part of his latest session, usually reserved for full members.

Here are 3 of Ian’s top Christmas nutrition tips to help you feel great without giving up the fun.

1. Get Ahead with Vitamin C Foods

Winter colds love this time of year, so it pays to give your immune system a little support.
Ian’s favourite reminder?
Brussels sprouts contain 19 times more vitamin C than carrots.
Love them or hate them, they’re brilliant for immune health.
Other great options include kiwi, peppers, citrus fruits and dark leafy greens.

2. Remember: One Big Meal Won’t Undo Your Progress

Christmas Day can easily add up to 5,000 to 6,000 calories, but Ian’s message is clear:
One day of extra food won’t make a dent in your long-term health.
Enjoy it, savour it, and move on.
The key is balance across the whole season, not perfection on one single day.

3. Watch Out for “Stress Hunger”

Christmas is meant to be joyful, but it can be stressful too.
Women rate their Christmas stress levels at 7 out of 10, and Ian reminds us that stress can disguise itself as hunger.
Before reaching for another mince pie, pause and ask yourself:
“Am I hungry, or do I need a breather?”
Sometimes five minutes of quiet or a quick chat with someone does far more good.
