The Fitness MOT: The Free At-Home Fitness Assessment Built for the Over-55s

Thank you for being here. And know this: I get it.

We all carry a picture of a fitter version of ourselves. For some people, that means moving better and feeling better, fewer aches getting out of bed, and climbing stairs without thinking about it. For others it is about how their clothes feel, about looking like themselves again. Both are completely valid. Both matter.

Getting fitter is genuinely tough. Our bodies get a bit like us as we get older: stubborn, comfortable, reluctant to change. Fitness drifts away slowly and quietly, and you often do not notice it going until it has already gone.

Before you can get to where you want to be, you need to know where you actually are right now.

Did your fitness drift? Or are you going to be pleasantly surprised by how much you kept?

Start With the Truth

I built Jim's Gym because I believe fitness for the over-55s should be rounded. Physical, yes. But also about mental health, creative health, and being part of a community that actually cares whether you show up. The timetable covers strength, balance, mobility, yoga, Tai Chi, Dancercise and more.

One thing I have learned from years of working with people over 55 is that the starting point matters. Not because there is a right or wrong answer, but because knowing your current fitness levels helps you make smarter choices. Which classes will give you the most? Where are you already doing well, and where do you need to build? What should your first four weeks actually look like?

You cannot answer those questions without a baseline.

What Is the Fitness MOT?

MOT stands for Mobility Optimisation Tune-up. I designed it specifically for Jim's Gym, for members and for anyone thinking about joining.

It is a series of straightforward exercises you do at home, with no equipment. It takes about ten minutes. You do not need a gym, a trainer standing next to you, or anything other than a bit of floor space and the willingness to find out where you stand.

When you complete it you'll have a clear picture of where you stand across five key areas: strength, balance, flexibility, cardio and upper body. Record your results, keep hold of them and retake the MOT every four to six weeks. That's when it gets really interesting. Seeing your own numbers move in the right direction is one of the most motivating things I've come across in my work as a personal trainer.

Who It Is For

Everyone who is thinking about joining, and every current member who wants a fresh picture of where they are.

If you have not exercised in a while, the MOT meets you exactly where you are. There is no pass or fail. There is just useful information.

If you are already active and want to use Jim's Gym to go further, the MOT tells you which areas to prioritise and gives you a clear benchmark to measure your progress against. Retake it after six weeks of regular classes, and you will see the difference in black and white. A lot of members find that moment, the first objective evidence that things are actually changing, more motivating than anything else.

How to Take It

The Fitness MOT is completely free and yours to keep. Once you download it you can take it as many times as you like, whenever you like.

Take it today to set your baseline. Then come back to it every four to six weeks and watch your numbers change. It takes ten minutes and you will have something genuinely useful by the end of it.
