It’s Not Just the Exercise That Keeps Us Strong. Community Does Too.

Why Community Matters More Than Ever

Mental Health Awareness Week has just wrapped up, and this year’s theme couldn’t be more relevant to us at Jim’s Gym: the importance of community.

If you’ve ever logged into a live class, joined a Thursday seated workout, or chatted with others in our WhatsApp group, you’ll know what we mean. The people around us make all the difference. They lift us, keep us accountable, and remind us that we’re not doing this alone.

At Jim’s Gym, we’re proud to be more than just an exercise platform. We’re a home for people over 55 who want to feel fitter, stronger, and part of something wonderful. A place where you’re not just working out. You’re showing up for yourself and connecting with others doing the same.

The Longest Study on Happiness

One of the most fascinating pieces of research into human well-being is the Harvard Study of Adult Development, also known as the Grant Study. It’s the longest-running study of its kind, tracking the physical and emotional well-being of more than 700 men from the 1930s to today. The study is still ongoing and now includes their children.

What makes this study so powerful is its consistency. Researchers didn’t just look at one moment in time. They followed participants across their entire lives. Some became successful business owners, some faced challenges with health or addiction, and others lived quiet family lives. The goal was simple: to understand what really helps people thrive.

After more than eighty years, the answer wasn’t money or job titles. It was relationships. People who stayed socially connected to family, friends, and their community were happier, healthier, and lived longer than those who were isolated.

As the researchers put it, “Loneliness kills. It’s as powerful as smoking or alcoholism.”

At Jim’s Gym, we see this in action every day. When people feel connected and supported, everything changes.

Backed by the Mental Health Foundation

Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, which ran from 12 to 18 May, focused on the power and importance of community for our mental health.

The Mental Health Foundation highlighted that being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us a sense of purpose. (mentalhealth.org.uk)

Their campaign encouraged people to find small ways to connect—whether through local groups, regular calls with friends, or simply being part of a group that makes you feel welcome.

That’s exactly what we aim to provide at Jim’s Gym. A space where moving your body goes hand-in-hand with feeling seen, encouraged, and part of something bigger than yourself.

Our Community in Action

At Jim’s Gym, we’ve seen the power of community firsthand. Here’s what some of our members have shared:

  • “I have felt more connected and motivated to exercise. I enjoy the sessions and the encouragement from others.”

  • “Feel part of a supportive group, which is not something I expected from online classes.”

  • “Enjoy belonging to a group. It’s always welcoming.”

  • “There is a community feel even online, which is brilliant.”

  • “The support from others keeps me going. I don’t feel like I’m doing this on my own.”

  • “Joining this group made me feel less isolated. I didn’t realise how much I missed being part of something.”

  • “Confidence has grown, in that I can do things with others and not feel judged.”

These are more than just kind words. They’re proof that feeling seen and supported helps people stay active, confident, and consistent.

How We Keep the Community Strong

The workouts are great, but the real magic of Jim’s Gym is what happens around them.

When you join, you’re welcomed into our private WhatsApp community. It’s a space where people check in, swap tips, share a laugh, and support one another. You might see someone celebrating a post-workout win, asking a question about their form, chatting about travel plans, or offering encouragement when someone’s having a tough week.

The conversations are friendly, down-to-earth, and refreshingly real. There’s a good mix of light-hearted moments and practical advice. Some members talk about modifying workouts to suit their bodies. Others share what’s working for them or simply pop in to say hello. It’s a space full of kindness and support, where people look out for one another and everyone’s welcome to join in, just as they are.

To help things flow, we’ve created different rooms:

  • General Chat. For daily encouragement, check-ins, and light conversation

  • Tech Support. So no one gets stuck accessing a session

  • Healthy Habits Club. A supportive space led by our dietitian, Ian Thomas

We’re also introducing new community spaces for each class. Whether you love Seated Fitness, Pilates, Tai Chi or Dancercise, you’ll have your own place to connect with others doing the same.

And if you ever have a question, want support, or just need a nudge, you’ve got direct access to me too.

Jim’s Gym isn’t just a fitness platform. It’s a home for people over 55 who want to move more, feel better, and be part of something that genuinely cares.
